This port city is located on a promontory of Galicia in the northwest of Spain.

It is known for its Roman lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules, which offers extensive views of the coastline. In the medieval old town is the porticoed Maria Pita square, surrounded by narrow pedestrian paths. In this square is the statue of María Pita, a woman of the 16th century who warned the city of the invasion of Sir Francis Drake.

The Collegiate Church of Santa María del Campo is a Romanesque church built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Next to it there is a small art museum, the Museum of Sacred Art of the Collegiate.

On a promontory is the Aquarium Finisterrae, a modern aquarium with fish from around the world, tanks with sharks and groupers, and a room dedicated to octopi. The Orzán beach is shaped like a half moon and is at the northern end, while the Riazor beach is to the south.

It also hosts the MUNCYT, a science and technology museum with interactive exhibitions.
